state health data
dashboard

Overview

For this project we were tasked with creating a design system for state-level health data dashboards and also provide guidance to data analysts to be able to create reports at scale.

The dashboard was to be used by the state health department in order to provide results and to make state-level decisions.

Deliverables

  • Phase 1 Design System for Tableau

GOALS

  • Create an initial design system for data analysts to create data dashboards at scale.

  • Ensure the design system meets AA accessibility standards.

how might we create a design system that will allow data analysts to create reports at scale without the need of a designer?
platform

The state health department uses Tableau in order to design their reports, and so we began with learning about Tableau.

Collaboration

We did not have access to Tableau so in order to gain knowledge on its capabilities, we worked with a data analysts to help us understand the platform and its design capabilities, components and interface.

audit

We began by auditing the original design and doing a thorough review of things to check such as the font, colors, formatting, and accessibility.

Color

It was important that we got the colors right for the dashboard, as we wanted to ensure that they easily conveyed the qualitative data, while also passing accessibility standards.

checking accessibility

Because this was a state-level design system, we needed to ensure that it passed the highest of accessibility standards. We tested the original colors to ensure that they passed AA level requirements. We continued adjusting the colors until standards were met.

Auditing the original colors to ensure they accommodate varying types of color blindness.

system

The final deliverable was a v1 PDF, which was to be used by data analysts to create the final reports.

Redlining

We created redlined diagrams in order to better assist data analysts in designing the reports without a designer's assistance. We wanted to ensure visual and experiential uniformity across all reports.

Color

For color, we created neutral palettes for use with diagrams such as pie charts and histograms, as well as additional colors that would be used for line graphs or other categorial diagrams. Again, all this was to ensure uniformity and visual legibility across all reports.

Learnings

For this project, collaboration and trust was a key component in completing it, as the design team was designing blind since we did not have access to the Tableau platform. It was important that we met regularly with a data analysts to ensure that we can move forward with each design step and complete the project on time.
